Bounces and suppressions

How emitemail protects your sender reputation by not mailing dead addresses.

Mailing addresses that bounce, or people who report you as spam, damages your reputation with Gmail and Outlook. emitemail stops that automatically.

When an address bounces permanently or reports spam, emitemail adds it to your suppression list and does not mail it again.

  • If every recipient of a request is suppressed, the request fails with 422 all_recipients_suppressed and nothing is sent.
  • If some are suppressed, the rest are sent and the response lists the skipped addresses in suppressed.

Suppressed addresses are not counted toward your cap.

Managing the list#

Under Suppressions you can see why an address was added and remove it, for example after a customer fixes a typo in their email address. Only remove an address if you are sure it is valid and wants your mail.

Blocks by a mail provider#

Some rejections are about the sending server, not the address. A refusal with a 5.7.x code, such as a policy or reputation block, shows as a bounce in your send log with the provider's reason. emitemail does not add the address to your suppression list or count it toward your bounce rate, because the address may be perfectly good. If one provider keeps blocking, write to support.

Scopes#

A suppression has a scope. Hard bounces block an address on all mail. A spam report on a message sent with a broadcast key blocks it on broadcast only, so the same person still gets their receipts and password resets. You choose the scope when you block an address by hand.

Bounce and complaint rates#

Keep hard bounces low and spam complaints lower. As a guide, accounts above about 5% hard bounces or about 0.1% complaints are reviewed. See the acceptable use policy.
