Brands
Keep products, businesses or clients apart, each with its own domains, keys, limits and sending reputation.
A brand is a separate sender inside your emitemail account. If you run more than one product, business or client, give each its own brand. They share your login and nothing else, so a problem with one never reaches another. Brands are free, up to 5 per account.
What is separate#
Each brand has its own:
- Domains and DNS records. A brand can only send from domains added to it.
- API keys. A key works for one brand and cannot send as another brand's domain.
- Send log, webhooks and suppression list. A customer who bounced for one brand is not blocked for another.
- Plan, monthly cap and daily limit. Each brand starts on the Free plan with its own allowance, and is billed on its own.
- Sending reputation. The automatic pause (see Limits and the cap) judges each brand on its own bounces and spam reports. If one brand is paused, the others keep sending.
Your own account is the default brand, called Main until you rename it under Brands. Renaming it does not change your own name. Add more under Brands, then switch between them with the brand menu in the top bar (on a phone, under the logo). With more than five brands the menu has a search box, and the arrow keys and Enter work too. Everything you see in the dashboard belongs to the brand you are working in.
Health at a glance#
Every brand shows a sending-health marker, in the menu and on the Brands page:
| Marker | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Healthy (green) | Bounces and spam reports are well under the pause line. |
| Watch (amber) | Getting warmer. Check where recent addresses came from. |
| At risk (red) | Close to the line where sending pauses on its own. |
| Paused (empty ring) | Sending is paused. Resume it yourself if you paused it. If emitemail paused it, write to support. |
The numbers behind the marker are the last 7 days: emails sent, hard bounces and spam reports, shown against the level at which emitemail pauses. When a brand gets close, we email you once, before anything is paused, so you can fix the list first.
Status and findings#
The All brands table on the Brands page has two status columns for each brand:
- Sending status. Enabled can send. Paused was paused by you (or by support) and stays paused until you resume it. Enforced was paused automatically because of bounces or spam reports, and needs support to restore.
- Reputation status. No findings, Low severity or High severity. Open a brand to see what is pulling it down, with the numbers and what to do about it.
You can pause and resume any brand yourself, one at a time or several together, from the table. While a brand is paused, its API keys and SMTP stop sending and return 403 account_suspended. Nothing else changes. You can only resume a brand you paused yourself.
Reputation policy#
Each brand has a policy that sets how early it is paused automatically:
| Policy | Pauses at |
|---|---|
| Standard (default) | The normal line, described in Limits and the cap. |
| Strict | Half the bounce and spam-report rates, and after 3 hard bounces instead of 5. |
Use Strict for a brand whose list you trust less, or whose reputation you want to guard closely. There is no setting that turns the automatic pause off. Every brand shares the reputation of emitemail's sending servers, so the pause protects the other brands too.
Budgets#
You can set a monthly budget and a daily budget on any brand, below what its plan allows. They are hard stops. When one is reached, that brand stops sending and requests return 429 brand_budget_reached. Other brands are not affected, and nothing is billed. Raise or clear the budget under Brands to resume. See Errors.
A budget cannot go above the plan's cap. It is there to keep a runaway script or a bad campaign on one brand from using up its allowance.
Creating and deleting#
- Add a brand under Brands. You need a confirmed email address.
- A new brand inherits your account's trusted status. If your account is new, a new brand is held to the same new-account limits.
- To delete a brand, revoke its API keys and cancel any paid plan on it first. Deleting removes its domains, send log and suppression list for good.
- To move a domain you already use into a brand, write to support. DNS records stay the same, so nothing needs to change at your DNS provider.
All brands send through emitemail's shared mail servers. Brands protect you from each other, and emitemail's automatic pause protects the servers, but a brand with a poor reputation can still affect delivery for mail from the same servers. Keeping each brand's list clean is what keeps all of them healthy.
